As is the norm, tossed and turned the night before returning to the trail. I was up at 7:00 and ready a short time later. I called the GSMNP Backcountry Office only to be told that the Clingmans Dome road was still closed. The Ranger expected that it would open…but when.

The Visitor Center didn’t open until 10:00. So with a bit of anxiety, it was off to McDonalds. A breakfast meal and a half later, it was goodbyes to family and friends. We were off to the top of the hill.

As we rounded the corner and saw the gate open, a sense of relief came over me. I’d be able to start where I left off. No Plan B. We climbed back up to the overlook, took some pictures, and said goodbye. Back into the woods.

The hike was beautiful and peaceful. The trail still covered in snow and ice in places. Melting runoff flowing down the middle most of the day. It was an enjoyable day.

My tent site…not ideal. But they never are. I’ll just deal with it.

The weather is supposed to be good for a few days!
