My day started off good. A calm, peaceful walk along a babbling brook. Then descended into a gorge and a grand waterfall. The morning walk lasted about another mile.
Then the Trail turned uphill. Again another big, demanding climb. My pace was good. It was about an hour and half ascent. The temperature started to climb too. I was drenched in sweat. Of course, every big up is followed by a big down. This descent took me to Watauga Lake.
I was already tired…and it was only 9.5 miles.
After walking the lake perimeter, again the Trail turned upward. I had to stop several times to rest, eat, and drink. It was really warm. By resting, my hike extended into the early evening. Thankfully a bit cooler and a breeze.
Todays mileage: 17.7.
Tomorrow’s terrain looks more forgiving.
Maybe a 20 mile day?
Better get up early.
