Last nights camp was high on a bluff, near a large granite outcropping, that overlooked Watauga Lake.  From the vista, you could look down into a large marina. I think I first awoke to the sound of birds. What kept me awake was the sound of the bass boats. All racing to the best fishing holes prior to daybreak.

The sunrise was obscured by clouds.  Sadly, nothing spectacular.

So I’m awake, it’s early…what about those 20 miles?

I committed. Packed up and out by 7:45. Pushed hard until the heat and humidity rolled in. Then it was a lot of resting and hydrating. Once the cooler late afternoon and evening temperatures arrived, I hustled to the shelter…campsite.

It was a new personal best. I hiked 22.7 miles in eleven hours. Including breaks!

Once I hit camp, the bugs were horrible. I couldn’t take it. Dove into the tent. Killed about twenty gnats that made it inside. Ate dinner and enjoyed laying down.

Just before dark, I exited the tent and finished my nightly chores. Bear bag, loose gear check, brush my teeth, and get ready for bed.

My campsite is flat!  I shall sleep well.

Yay!  Tomorrow is town.

For the first time…I hiked a whole page in one day!
