Today was another of the great days on the Trail!

Within the first hour of leaving camp, I crossed a road and entered an active pasture. It was a hike up and over a grassy hill. So beautiful and peaceful. On the other side, I passed through a turnstile and entered the forest.  About fifty yards into the trees, I encountered a bear!  We both froze, stared at each other, and wondered what to do. I was thinking…camera. He was thinking…run. He turned and dashed down the hill.  Gone within seconds.

The trail continued upward, skirting Mt. Rogers. The highest point in Virginia. It then entered State Forest lands and Grayson Highlands State Park. Both famous for the wild horses. They were everywhere and remarkably friendly. The views and vistas were stunning. At one point, I entered a people corral. It was a fenced area for humans to camp that kept the horses away. Inside a self proclaimed “Trail Devil” was handing out cold PBR.

The Trail conditions then soured. Rocks and roots for miles. The kind of terrain that beat your feet up. Heck…who am I kidding…it beats your whole body up.

The rain is still the lingering issue.  At least I’m through the 6,000′ sections. I wouldn’t want to be above timberline when this cold front arrives.

I’m not sure what I’m doing yet. Either hole up and wait it out. Or try to out run it.

Guess I’ll decide in the morning.

Oh yeah…500 miles baby!
