I did it!
No…not the 24 mile day or 600 trail miles. I finally got my lazy rear in gear and was on trail by 7:00. Walking early in the morning is quite enjoyable. The birds are singing, while the forest feels quiet. I’m going to try to start early from here on out. We shall see how that works.
Despite the heavy overnight rain, the Trail was in fair condition. Most of the day was ridge running. On top of the ridges the footing was excellent. Conditions worsened when climbing or descending through gaps. At the lower elevations, the mountain laurel thrives. It’s pretty, but it collects the rain. Deep puddles and mud bogs abound. You have no choice but to plow straight through.
Today’s weather was great. Mostly sunny and cool. Perfect hiking weather. Unfortunately, the forecast continues to call for heavy rain tomorrow and Friday. The kind of rain that I don’t need to be out in. So it’s up early and push to Pearisburg. Hopefully I will outrun the storm.
Time to take some vitamin I, otherwise known as ibuprofen, and go to bed.
