My background is in aviation. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with aircraft and flight. I followed my passion and enjoyed a wonderful career with a commercial airline. Besides earning a living and traveling the world, I’ve taken several ideas from aviation and adopted them into my life…checklists and acronyms.
Most everyone uses checklists. Whether a grocery or packing list, you understand the importance of staying organized. However, acronyms may be a new idea. Think KISS (keep it simple stupid), FUBAR (f’d up beyond all recognition), SNAFU (situation normal all f’d up)…and don’t forget BEAST MODE.
Today’s acronym: STOP
S – Stop
T – Think
O – Observe
P – Plan
As much as we may prepare for what we think is coming, life is unscripted. Whether in the wilderness or the boardroom, we often are presented with difficult situations. If you act impulsively, going off script can lead to unexpected consequences and chaos. So when confronted with a stressful, difficult, or emergency situation…STOP.
- Stop – Take a deep breath. Remain calm. Recognize the obstacle. Your goal is to not make the situation worse.
- Think– Understand the situation. Consider the consequences of inaction. Identify the true obstacles and avoid any perceived barriers. Stay within you personal capability. Do your best to explore all options.
- Observe – Check your environment. Know your surroundings. Careful inspection may find useful tools, equipment, or supplies. If appropriate, ask questions of others in your group. They may possess the knowledge or skill to help move forward. Take no action until you have completely thought it through.
- Plan – Prioritize your needs. Develop a plan. Make decisions. Commit. Proceed with caution.
The situation usually isn’t as bad as it seems. Don’t procrastinate…keep moving forward towards the goal. Stay positive and trust your judgement. If needed, STOP again. Adjust your plan to meet the changing circumstances.
“The most important factor in survival is neither intelligence or strength, but adaptability.” – Charles Darwin
