Last night, I was camped near three 30ish young men. All carrying the right gear and talking big to those who would listen. And even to those who didn’t care to hear. They were packed up and on the trail a few minutes before me. I caught up to them after the first mile. Dogged them through two climbs. On the third climb, I passed one midway up and the other two at the top. They were quite shocked.  My pace held and I bested them down into the gap. Score one for the old guy.

Trail Magic was waiting!  BBQ, hot dogs, chips, soda, and cookies. Who knew…a hot dog with BBQ on top is quite good. Many thanks to the family from Oak Ridge, TN.  I must admit that I waited for the three guys to leave first. I had my moment.

There was a big climb ahead of us…Jacob’s Ladder. Man what a hill. Straight up for most of the way. A few switchbacks near the top. All that work and the summit was covered in trees. No view to be had.

The afternoon was quite warm. I stopped for water at every available source. My legs tired. I was glad to reach camp. The days total was 11.5 miles. It sure felt like more.

The weather forecast is for rain in the morning. My plan is to stop at Fontana Lodge.

Maybe I’ll beat the rain.Â
